The motto of the 27th WDR European Forum is “What now? Europe and the pressure on democracy”.
The first topic will be Europe's lessons from history and how it can arm itself against extremism and fascism.

Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) answers questions from the moderators - and from generations X, Y and Z.
How young people feel about compulsory military service, what place peace has in the current security debate and whether the model of a united Europe has a future: Further panels on this day will deal with these issues. Finally, the focus will be on the European economy in the global trade war.

On the second day of the WDR Europaforum, the new Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) will answer questions on whether and how diplomacy works in unpeaceful times.
This is followed by a discussion: What does “left” actually mean in a world that is moving ever further to the right? The on-site program will be supplemented by a discussion with the EU Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration from Brussels.

Donald Trump has barely been in office for a second time when the global world order is beginning to totter. Is the transatlantic alliance finally on the brink of collapse?
The third day of the 27th WDR Europaforum will also focus on the question of how the spread of disinformation threatens liberal democracy - and where it is already having a destructive effect.

The motto of this year's WDR Europaforum is "Under pressure: How does the EU stand up to populism, extremism and nationalism?".
To kick things off, we will talk to a historian about lessons learned from history in dealing with extremism and nationalism. An interview with Wolfgang Schmidt, Head of the Chancellery, will take a close look at the red-green-yellow government's actions, and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will answer questions about how the European Union deals with extremism and nationalism. The on-site discussions will be supplemented by interviews with young MEPs from Strasbourg.

What does an economic policy that creates confidence look like? Robert Habeck, Economics and Climate Protection Minister and Vice-Chancellor, addresses this question. Former German President Joachim Gauck and historian Christina Morina will also talk about the right way to deal with populists and extremists. In contributions from Brussels, top German candidates for the European elections will be presented and outgoing MEPs will take a look back at their time in the European Parliament.
